I was eighteen when I got hooked on pornography. It was the kind of entertainment that easily excites my imagination, taking me out into the world of pleasure and worldly bliss.
That addiction went on for a such a long period of time. I struggled against it. I tried so hard to fight it only to find myself going back to its pangs. Those are the times that darkness seems to embrace my whole being. My heart and my mind know that it is wrong but the call of my flesh seems to be uncontrollable. I gave in to it, because I let it to control me.
The struggle went on until I spiritually met Jesus; until I allowed Him to enter and take hold of my heart. From that moment I felt like I was transformed. I have become a new being.
2 Corinthians 5:17 “Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, the new creation has come: The old has gone, the new is here!”
But it was not all that easy even after I started to have Jesus in my heart. The evil still makes its way around me, as if he is trying to grab me away from righteousness.
In those moments of temptation, what I usually do is pray and seek help from the bible. I want to share with you these beautiful bible verses which can help you (and I) fight against one the most powerful evils in our world.
1 Corinthians 6:18 “Flee immorality. Every other sin that a man commits is outside the body, but the immoral man sins against his own body.”
Colossians 3:5 “Therefore consider the members of your earthly body as dead to immorality, impurity, passion, evil desire, and greed, which amounts to idolatry.”
Matthew 5:28 “But I say to you that everyone who looks at a woman with lustful intent has already committed adultery with her in his heart.”
1 John 2:16 “For all that is in the world—the desires of the flesh and the desires of the eyes and pride in possessions—is not from the Father but is from the world.”
1 Corinthians 3:16 “Don’t you know that you yourselves are God’s temple and that God’s Spirit dwells in your midst?”
My friends, we are not alone in the battle against temptations. Even Jesus, himself, experienced to be tempted by Satan in the wilderness. Read Matthew 4:1-11. Being the Son of God that He is, Satan gave up in tempting Him because His faith was so strong and did not waver at all.
In contrary, being ordinary people that we are, we may not be able to fight these daily temptations around us. Evil will always be around to mock us. To tempt us. To drag us away from God, and to whisper in our ears telling us “Come, this will give you too much pleasure that you can’t experience in your God!”
But one thing is for sure, we can always turn our back from evil and focus in Jesus who is the perfecter of our faith.
My point is we can all be like Jesus, or just try to be like him. We need to be strong and see to it that we guard our hearts, our minds, our eyes from worthless things that this world offers.
Romans 12:2 “Do not conform any longer to the pattern of this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind. Then you will be able to test and approve what God’s will is — his good, pleasing and perfect will.”
Philippians 4:8 “Finally, brothers, whatever is true, whatever is honorable, whatever is just, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, whatever is commendable, if there is any excellence, if there is anything worthy of praise, think about these things.”
Like a father and a friend to us, Jesus is always here to remind us that:
Proverbs 7:21-27 “With much seductive speech she persuades him; with her smooth talk she compels him. All at once he follows her, as an ox goes to the slaughter, or as a stag is caught fast till an arrow pierces its liver; as a bird rushes into a snare; he does not know that it will cost him his life. And now, O sons, listen to me, and be attentive to the words of my mouth. Let not your heart turn aside to her ways; do not stray into her paths.”
1 Thessalonians 4:3-6 “For this is the will of God, your sanctification: that you abstain from sexual immorality; that each one of you know how to control his own body in holiness and honor, not in the passion of lust like the Gentiles who do not know God; that no one transgress and wrong his brother in this matter, because the Lord is an avenger in all these things, as we told you beforehand and solemnly warned you.”
These are just some of the many messages that we can get from the Bible in overcoming temptations and worldly pleasures.
This is a hard battle, I know. I had been there, and to be honest with you, I still struggle until now. I wrote this article to remind you (and myself) that we can always get help from Jesus whenever we find ourselves weaken against temptation.
Let us pray:
“And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil: For thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory, for ever. Amen.” —- Matthew 6:13
